Hartalika Teej Vrat Story (Hartalika Teej Katha)
Shiv Ji had explained about this fast in detail to Maa Parvati Ji. Maa Gauri was born in Himalaya’s house as Maa Parvati. Since childhood, Maa Parvati wanted to get Lord Shiva as her husband and for that she did rigorous penance. She did penance by staying without food for 12 years. One day Narad Ji came to her and said that pleased with Parvati’s rigorous penance, Lord Vishnu wants to marry your daughter.. Maharaja Himalaya was very happy to hear Narad Muni’s words. On the other hand, Narad Muni went in front of Lord Vishnu and said that Maharaja Himalaya wants to get you married to his daughter Parvati.
Lord Vishnu also gave his permission for this. Then Narad ji went to Maa Parvati and informed her that her father has fixed her marriage with Lord Vishnu. Hearing this, Parvati was very disappointed and she requested her friends to take her to a secluded secret place. As per the wish of Maa Parvati, her friends left her in a cave situated in a dense deserted forest, hiding her from the eyes of her father Maharaja Himalaya.
Staying here, she started rigorous penance to get Lord Shiva as her husband, for which she established a Shivling made of sand. Incidentally, it was the day of Bhadrapad Shukla Tritiya in Hasta Nakshatra when Mother Parvati established the Shivling. On this day, she kept a waterless fast and also stayed awake at night.
Lord Shiva was pleased with the hard penance of the mother and blessed her to fulfill her wish. The next day, along with her friend, Mother Parvati broke her fast and immersed all the puja material in the river Ganga. On the other hand, Mother Parvati’s father was worried about leaving his daughter at home after promising to marry her to Lord Vishnu.
Then he reached that place searching for Parvati. After this, Mother Parvati told him the reason for leaving her home and told about her resolve to marry Lord Shiva and the boon given by Shiva, then father Maharaja Himalaya apologized to Lord Vishnu and agreed to his daughter’s marriage with Lord Shiva.
